Express Minnesota
Low-income children living right here in the Twin Cities have limited
access to no-cost dental care in their neighborhood.
What Is The Need?
As a professional in the dental community, you, more than perhaps
anyone, understand the connection between oral health and overall
health. In America, tooth decay is the single most common chronic
childhood disease—five times more common than asthma and seven times
more common than hay fever. (U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services,
2003)
There are more than 139,000 low-income kids living in the Twin Cities,
and in 2006, 52% of kids who qualified for public medical insurance
in Minnesota had not seen a dentist in the previous year. And 88%
of these kids do not have sealants to protect their molars.
Additionally, in Minnesota only 55% of all children in 2003 (the
latest year statistics are available) had both a preventative medical
and dental check-up.
Parents face barriers of cost and transportation when looking for
a dentist for their child. There is a dire need for our services.
You Can Help
Pediatric dental disease is 100% preventable. Tooth decay and dental
access are two problems that are 100% solvable when all of us work
together.
This is why six concerned dental professionals – five dentists and
a dental hygienist – joined together with fifteen business professionals
to create Molar Express Minnesota.
We are encouraging you to join us in creating healthy smiles and
healthy futures for kids that need us the most. We will help 2,000
low-income kids every year by providing comprehensive dental care
and prevention education aboard a mobile dental vehicle that travels
directly into neighborhoods where children live and go to school.
And we don’t stop there. We are working with dental providers to
ensure children have dental homes for their 6-month follow-up check
ups.

Molar Express Minnesota is creating a growing community of dental
professionals who believe that now is the time to address this community-wide
problem and that their contribution will make a difference.
Molar Express Minnesota is the only mobile
dental program offering no-cost comprehensive dental treatment and
prevention education exclusively for low-income children living
in the 7-county metro area. The benefits of a mobile service are
many. Through site partners, we can reach parents who might not
know how important proper dental care is to the overall health of
their child. We also go right into neighborhoods and communities
facing the greatest barriers to dental access and help kids before
their teeth are irreparably harmed and need to be pulled.

are directly used to destroy tooth decay and give kids the tools
they need to rebuild their healthy smiles.

with proper treatment and the toothbrushes and toothpaste they need

including laboratories located in the Twin Cities, can come together
to help create a brighter future for low-income kids. Your support

Dentists Creating Smiles
Concerned About Kids?
Molar Express Minnesota was started by a group of concerned business
professionals – including 5 dentists – to address the dire dental
access issue families face when searching for a neighborhood dentist
for their child.
Dental board members include: Michael S. Sudit, DDS (MEM Board President);
Shauna Novak, DDS; Karl Self, DDS, MBA; R. Bruce Templeton, DMD,
M.S.; and Hattie Thorn-Black, DDS.
Every child will receive top-notch comprehensive restorative dental
treatment and the tools they need to prevent tooth decay from coming
back. A family tooth decay prevention kit will be sent home with
each child to help parents reinforce the preventative messages learned
aboard Molar Express Minnesota and help their other children learn
how to protect their teeth.

With a donation of $500, you will receive 150 cards that you can
use to let your family, friends and patients know you have made
a contribution to Molar Express Minnesota.
In addition, if you donate a minimum of $2,500, you’ll receive a
Keep Them Smiling Society plaque for display in your office or waiting

the importance of taking care of their teeth and gums. Few other
health professionals can take the time and have the direct positive
impact on kids that hygienists have. You are also critical in demonstrating
a health care profession that many low-income children haven’t experienced
first hand. Who knows? You may be inspiring a whole new generation
of hygienists!
